The term “Shālākya” comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Shalaka’, meaning a probe or instrument — referring to the specialized tools used in this branch. Shalakya Tantra covers over 70 diseases of the Urdhvajatru (above shoulder region) and is equivalent to modern ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat), Ophthalmology, Dentistry, and Neurology.
Shālākya Tantra is the specialized branch of Ayurveda that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to the organs above the neck — including the eyes (Netra), ears (Karna), nose (Nasa), throat (Mukha), head (Shira), and oral cavity (Danta, Jihva, Kantha).
